EnerNOC Awarded 40 MW PG&E Contract
March 02 , 2007
Boston, MA –EnerNOC, Inc., a leading developer and provider of clean and intelligent power solutions, announced today that it has entered into a 40 MW Negawatt Network™ agreement with Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E). Implementation of the Negawatt Network™ will expand EnerNOC’s demand response portfolio – already exceeding 500 MW – and strengthen its presence in the Western United States.
The five year contract calls for EnerNOC to aggregate demand response capacity at commercial, institutional, and industrial customer sites in PG&E’s service area during the summer months of 2007 to 2011. EnerNOC will utilize its award-winning technology to remotely curtail participating customers’ electricity consumption within 30 minutes of receiving a signal from PG&E. EnerNOC will monitor and control the demand response capacity it enables in the Negawatt Network™ from its 24/7 Network Operations Center in order to provide PG&E with an immediate and verifiable resource and to help avoid rolling blackouts. According to the California Public Utility Commission, utility demand response programs, like EnerNOC’s Negawatt Network™, are “a key to system management during periods of critical need and potential system instability.”
Following the July 2006 California heat storms, California Public Utility Commission President Michael Peevey requested that PG&E increase the available demand response capacity for the summer of 2007 and beyond, and fourteen companies submitted proposals in response to a request for proposal process initiated by PG&E in Fall 2006. EnerNOC President and Chief Operating Officer David Brewster states, “From 2005 to 2006, peak demand for electricity in California grew by over ten percent. EnerNOC’s Negawatt Network™ is a clean, reliable, and economical alternative to peaking plants, while helping to prevent rolling blackouts.”
The agreement is subject to approval by the California Public Utility Commission.
