Reston-Based Mpowerplayer Raises $2.5 Million in First Round
Reston, Va. — Mpowerplayer, a Reston-based developer of software that allows content providers to offer online demos of mobile games, said on Wednesday that it has secured $2.5 million in its first round of funding. Investors included New Atlantic Ventures, the Center for Innovative Technology’s GAP Fund and LaunchBox Digital. The company said that it will use the proceeds to accelerate the adoption of its widget-based mobile game catalog on social networks and game-oriented community web sites. “Seventy percent of online consumers play games in their web browser, but less than 5% play games on their mobile phone,” said Michael Powers, the CEO of Mpowerplayer. “Every one of these people carries a game console in their pocket, but they need to discover what they can do with it.” Mpowerplayer’s current customers include EA Mobile and Sega Mobile, which use the company’s platform to power their own demo applications.
